Description
The PSSC Inertial Balance Kit, also known as an inertial mass balance or horizontal oscillation mass apparatus, is designed for demonstrating how the mass of an object can be determined from the frequency at which it vibrates in a mechanical system. This apparatus helps students distinguish between mass and weight. Weight depends on gravitational force, while mass can be investigated through inertia and oscillation behaviour without relying directly on gravitational weighing. The kit uses a fixed plate clamped to the table and a second plate that overhangs the table. The second plate is connected to the fixed plate by spring blades, allowing it to oscillate back and forth in the horizontal plane only.
Weights are placed in the oscillating plate or separately supported by a cord, allowing students to compare how added mass affects the oscillation period or frequency. The timing of oscillations is performed using a stopwatch, making the kit suitable for classroom investigations involving frequency, period, inertia, oscillatory motion and experimental measurement. Users should confirm the included masses, spring blade condition, clamp compatibility, timing method, support cord arrangement and classroom experiment procedure before use. Clamp the apparatus securely before starting the experiment. Loose clamping or unstable bench placement can affect results and may cause the apparatus to move unexpectedly.
Keep fingers clear of spring blades and the oscillating plate during operation. Do not overload the plate or deflect the springs beyond the approved experiment method. This product is intended for laboratory or educational settings only and should be used under appropriate supervision. This item is supplied as the selected Inertial Balance Kit only. Stopwatch, additional masses, balance, measuring rule, support cord, worksheets, clamps beyond the supplied arrangement and additional mechanics accessories are not included unless specified separately.
