Description
The Metal Magdeburg Hemispheres, also known as atmospheric pressure hemispheres, are designed for demonstrating the force produced by atmospheric pressure. The apparatus consists of two metal hemispheres that are placed together tightly to form a sphere, with a valve used to control whether air remains inside or is removed during the demonstration. In the first part of the demonstration, the two hemispheres are placed together and the valve is closed. Compatible spring scales can then be attached to each hemisphere and used to pull the two halves apart while observing the applied force.
In the second part, the two halves are placed together with the valve open, and a compatible vacuum pump is used to remove air from inside the sphere. The valve is then closed before pulling again with spring scales. After air has been removed, the hemispheres are harder to separate because atmospheric pressure acts on the outside of the sphere, producing a greater holding force. This apparatus is useful for school science laboratories, university teaching laboratories and physics classrooms studying air pressure, vacuum, force and pressure difference demonstrations.
Users should confirm the required pump connection, valve operation, spring scale capacity, sealing condition and approved demonstration method before use. Do not over-pump, use damaged seals or fittings, or pull the hemispheres in an unsafe direction. Keep hands, faces and fragile items clear during separation.
This product is intended for laboratory or educational settings only and should be used under appropriate supervision. This item is supplied as the metal Magdeburg hemispheres only. Vacuum pump, tubing, spring scales, hooks, stands, worksheets, PPE and additional accessories are not included unless specified separately.
LabChoice Australia supplies Magdeburg Hemispheres and physics demonstration apparatus for school science laboratories, university teaching laboratories and educational facilities requiring practical equipment for atmospheric pressure and vacuum experiments.
