The Decision Reaction Timer Device for Response Time Testing, also known as an IEC reaction tester, is designed for measuring a person’s reaction time in classroom and laboratory demonstrations. The unit measures the time between a stimulus and the user’s response. The stimulus can be a large LED lighting up, a beeper sounding, or both operating together. The large LED can illuminate either red or green, allowing the apparatus to support simple response tests as well as decision-based reaction experiments.

The delay can be started by a second person, or the person being tested can start the test by pressing a button. A random and unpredictable delay of 10 to 90 seconds occurs before the LED or beeper activates. The reaction tester can be used as a single decision tester, where the light turns on and the user presses the button, or as a dual decision tester, where the user must identify the light colour and choose the correct button. Two press buttons are provided, with 1 m long press button cables. By taping one press button to a wooden block, the setup can be arranged as a driving reaction timer activity for engaging classroom demonstrations.

This apparatus is useful for school science laboratories, university teaching laboratories and psychology, biology or physics classrooms studying response time, sensory stimulus, decision making and human performance. Users should confirm the required test mode, external timer compatibility, power supply, button arrangement, demonstration method and supervision requirements before use. Ancillary equipment required includes a 240/12 V AC PlugPak or suitable classroom power supply, plus a digital timer that runs when contacts are closed and stops when opened, such as LC-80-LB4057-001 or similar.
