Description
The Lever and Fulcrum Apparatus with Weight Carriers, also known as a moments apparatus or lever balance demonstrator, is designed for teaching the principle of moments in basic mechanics. The apparatus uses a 1 m wooden rule that balances at its midpoint on a vertical pillar mounted on a base, allowing the rule to act as a simple lever. A knife-edge is fitted at the midpoint of the wooden rule, and the support includes a vee bearing to take the knife-edge for a low-friction balancing point. The demonstration shows that a system balances when the weight multiplied by the distance from the pivot on one side equals the weight multiplied by the distance on the other side.
The kit includes 2 × 50 g special slotted weight carriers that hook over the edge of a standard metre rule and can be slid to different positions for moment comparison activities. The slotted weights themselves are not supplied, as many schools already have suitable slotted weights for this style of experiment. This apparatus is useful for school science laboratories, university teaching laboratories and physics classrooms studying levers, torque, moments, equilibrium and mechanical advantage. Users should confirm available slotted weights, carrier compatibility, classroom method, loading limits and support stability before use.
Do not overload the metre rule, drop weights onto the bench or place fingers under moving carriers or falling masses during adjustment. This product is intended for laboratory or educational settings only and should be used under appropriate supervision. This item is supplied as the lever and fulcrum apparatus with 2 × 50 g special slotted weight carriers only. Slotted weights, additional hangers, clamps, worksheets and accessories are not included unless specified separately.
