Description
The Constant Volume Thermometer, Charles’ Law, also known as a CVT apparatus, is designed for teaching the relationship between gas temperature and pressure using a constant volume method. In this apparatus, a volume of air is heated to a known temperature while the mercury column is adjusted so that the air volume remains constant. This method helps students establish the relationship between pressure and temperature for a fixed volume of gas, which is commonly used as a practical teaching approach linked to Charles’ Law and gas law theory. Although theoretical Charles’ Law describes the relationship between volume and temperature at constant pressure, the constant volume thermometer method is often easier to perform accurately in a teaching laboratory.
The apparatus is useful for senior school physics, university teaching laboratories and gas law demonstrations where controlled observation and measurement are required. Users should confirm the apparatus length, mercury handling requirements, heating method, thermometer compatibility, pressure reading method and approved experiment procedure before ordering or use. Mercury must be handled with strict care. Use only where permitted by local regulations and institutional safety procedures. Do not use damaged apparatus, and ensure mercury spill controls are available before operation.
