Description

The IEC Melde’s apparatus string vibrator is a bench-mounted device for producing standing wave patterns on a taut cord. A cord, typically 1 to 2 m long, is attached to the vibrator armature through a hole at the tip, then pulled horizontally along the bench and guided over the bench edge using the included pulley. A hanging weight on the free end provides a known tension in the cord for repeatable wave studies.
The kit includes a bench clamp and a pulley-on-rod assembly to guide the cord over the edge and adjust alignment so the cord runs parallel to the bench top. When connected to a high-power signal generator, the vibrator armature is adjusted and clamped to vibrate at the set frequency. With cord tension controlled by the weight, clear standing-wave patterns form and can be measured to relate frequency and wavelength in string wave experiments.

FAQs

Q: What is this Melde’s apparatus used for?
A: Creating standing waves on a cord to study frequency and wavelength relationships.

Q: How is tension applied to the cord?
A: By passing the cord over the bench edge and attaching a hanging weight.

Q: How is the cord attached to the vibrator?
A: Through a hole in the tip of the moving armature.

Q: What accessories are included for setup?
A: A bench clamp and a pulley on a rod to guide and align the cord.

Q: What drives the vibration frequency?
A: A connected high-power signal generator sets the vibration frequency.
