The Powell’s Pattern Wave Motion Apparatus with Rotating Scale, also known as Powell’s wave motion apparatus, is designed for demonstrating wave behaviour in physics teaching laboratories. The IEC version is described as a moulded and quietly running system, helping provide smoother classroom demonstrations compared with designs that may be noisy or rattly during operation. This apparatus demonstrates both longitudinal wave motion and transverse wave motion, making it useful for showing how particle displacement differs in each wave type.
The handle includes a 0–360° scale, allowing students to study sine wave action relative to the angle rotated by the cams during the demonstration. The rotating cam system helps visualise wave formation, phase relationship, wave progression and repeated oscillatory motion in a clear classroom format.
