Description
The Savart’s Tone Wheels, also known as toothed tone wheels or acoustic frequency demonstration wheels, are designed for demonstrating sound production, vibration and frequency relationships in physics and general science classrooms. The apparatus consists of 4 metal discs, each approximately 73 mm diameter, mounted on a central shaft so the set can be rotated during demonstration. Each disc has a different number of teeth cut around the edge. The listed tooth counts are 36, 45, 54 and 72, giving a ratio of 4 : 5 : 6 : 8.
When a stiff card is gently placed against the edge of a rotating wheel, the teeth strike the card and produce a tone. The pitch depends on the number of teeth and the rotational speed of the wheel. When all four discs touch the stiff card together, the combined sound can demonstrate a natural musical chord, making the apparatus useful for linking mechanical motion with audible frequency. This product is suitable for demonstrations involving vibration, pitch, frequency ratio, sound generation, musical intervals and acoustic wave concepts.
Users should confirm mounting method, stem compatibility, rotation method, classroom demonstration setup and required accessories before ordering or use. Keep fingers, hair, loose clothing and loose objects away from the rotating toothed discs and shaft during operation. Use a suitable stiff card only and apply light contact. Excessive force may damage the card, alter the sound or interfere with the rotating wheel.
This product is intended for laboratory or educational settings only and should be used under appropriate supervision. This item is supplied as the selected Savart’s tone wheel assembly only. Stiff card, handle, motor drive, support stand, clamps, worksheets, sound meter and additional acoustics accessories are not included unless specified separately.
LabChoice Australia supplies Savart’s Tone Wheels and physics teaching apparatus for school science laboratories, university teaching laboratories and educational facilities requiring practical demonstrations of sound, vibration and frequency relationships.
