Description

The IEC Current Balance Kit is designed to fit directly onto the IEC air cored solenoid. A platform attaches to the solenoid end cheek and supports a slim beam carrying a single turn of conductor. The beam balances on sensitive pivots using the two small round support rods fitted to the platform, enabling small deflections to be observed reliably.
When current is passed through both the solenoid coil and the single-turn conductor, the beam deflects due to magnetic field interaction. Small weights are added to restore balance, and the weight required provides a measurement of the force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field. This is the same core principle used to explain why electric motors produce torque.

FAQs

Q: What does this kit attach to?
A: It is designed to fit directly to the IEC air cored solenoid.

Q: What is the moving element in the balance?
A: A slim blade carrying a single turn of conductor, balanced on sensitive pivots.

Q: What causes the blade to deflect?
A: Current in the solenoid and the single-turn conductor creates interacting magnetic fields, producing a force and deflection.

Q: How is the force measured?
A: Small weights are added until balance is restored, the required weight corresponds to the magnetic force.

Q: What concept does it demonstrate?
A: The force on a conductor carrying current in a magnetic field, the basis of electric motor action.
