Description
This resonance apparatus is a practical teaching setup for investigating air-column resonance in a tube with an adjustable effective length. It consists of a 1 m vertical stand with a metric scale and a 20 mm plastic tube connected to a 1 L water vessel. By raising or lowering the water vessel, the water level in the tube changes, which adjusts the air column length.
A tuning fork is supplied so students can check for resonance by listening at the mouth of the tube while adjusting the level. The air-column lengths where resonance is strongest are marked on the scale, then used to calculate the wavelength and frequency associated with the tuning fork.
