Description
This brass bar and gauge apparatus is a classic teaching tool for demonstrating the effects of heating and cooling on metal dimensions. It is used to show thermal expansion and contraction in a clear, measurable way using a matched bar and gauge.
When the brass bar is heated, its length and diameter increase and it will no longer fit the gauge. If the gauge is chilled in ice, the gauge opening contracts and the bar will also not fit, showing the effect of cooling on metal size. Unlike the ball and ring apparatus, the bar and gauge are not chained together.
