The Hodson Light Box and Optical Set, also known as a classroom light box optical kit, is designed for school science and physics teaching laboratories where students perform practical experiments in basic optics and colour blending. The comprehensive kit of parts supports experiments involving ray tracing, reflection, refraction, lenses, mirrors, prisms, colour mixing and general light behaviour when used with approved classroom methods. The light box is designed to take a 12 V × 30 W QI lamp. The standard 12 V version should be used with a suitable compatible 12 V power source, while the transformer version includes a mini 240/12 V transformer for use with mains power where appropriate.

The lamp socket allows one compatible light box to be plugged into another, supporting practical classroom setups where two boxes need to run together. The banana plugs on the cables are stackable and moulded to the cable for durable student use. The lens adjuster is designed so it cannot be removed by students, helping reduce lost components and supporting longer service life in busy teaching laboratories. The kit includes 3 slit formers to provide multiple rays for optics demonstrations. The supplied sets of 8 colour filters and plates are heat resistant, supporting colour blending and light path activities under supervised classroom conditions.

The mirrors are described as efficient and virtually unbreakable, making them practical for student handling during routine optics experiments. All parts are available individually, including the 3 tiered styrene foam storage housing. The version supplied with transformer includes a mini 240/12 V transformer that fits inside the styrene foam housing with the balance of the standard kit.
