Description
Millikan’s apparatus for demonstrating electron charge by atomising a latex solution into small spheres, charging them, then observing their motion between charged plates in a cell as plate voltage is reversed. Sphere movement is viewed through a small telescope with a graticule, and known plate potential with plotted sphere velocities supports calculating the charge on a single electron.

Millikan’s apparatus without inbuilt power sources permits the atomising of a latex solution into small spheres. A rubber hose induces a static charge on the spheres, which are introduced between charged plates in the form of a cell. As the voltage between the cell plates is reversed, the particles are attracted to one plate or the other. Their movement is viewed through a small telescope with a graticule. Power sources are required to be connected. Knowing the potential on the cell plates and plotting the velocities of the spheres permits the calculation of the charge on a single electron.
