Description
The Photoelectric Effect Apparatus, also known as a Planck’s constant LED demonstration unit, is designed for teaching the photoelectric effect in physics classrooms, university teaching laboratories and supervised educational modern physics experiments. This new version uses two separate digital meters so students and instructors can view both key readings at the same time. One meter displays the current through the photo tube, while the second meter displays the backing voltage required to bring the current exactly to zero. The current meter displays photo tube current in 0.1 nanoamp resolution. This supports practical observation of small photocurrents during experiments involving light source selection, photoelectric response and stopping potential behaviour.
The backing voltage meter displays the voltage needed to reduce the photo tube current to zero. This reading is central to photoelectric effect experiments where students compare stopping voltage across different light sources. The light source is provided by five LEDs selectable from the front panel. This supports faster setup and clearer classroom operation compared with manually changing filters during every measurement. The traditional method using a white light source and colour filters can still be performed where preferred. However, the light source and filters are not part of this kit and must be purchased separately or borrowed from an older compatible instrument.
The unit is powered by a 12 V AC or DC plug pack, not supplied, or by banana plug connection from a normal school power supply. Users should confirm power supply suitability before use. The photo tube cathode is coated with caesium and antimony on silver oxide, as supplied. This coating supports the photoelectric response required for Planck’s constant and stopping potential demonstrations when used with suitable light sources and operating conditions. This apparatus is intended for supervised educational and laboratory use. Users should follow suitable electrical safety procedures, use compatible power supplies and operate the instrument according to the supplied experiment instructions.
LabChoice Australia supplies Photoelectric Effect Apparatus with Digital Meters and 5 LEDs for school physics departments, university teaching laboratories and modern physics teaching environments. It is suitable for supervised demonstrations of photoelectric emission, stopping potential, photocurrent behaviour, LED wavelength effects and Planck’s constant experiments.
