Description
This compact, strongly built DC motor and generator module is designed for hands-on Electricity and Magnetism practicals, and can be hand wound using the supplied wheel and belt. When operating as a DC motor, the belt can be easily removed. The unit can run with a permanent U-shaped magnet, or it can fit into a U-core as part of a Hodson induction kit.
When used with the U-core, a coil on the core can generate the DC field. This allows the field strength to be varied so students can study how motor or generator behaviour changes with field conditions. The construction is built for long service life, using ball race bearings, a good quality commutator, and robust sprung brushes. LEDs monitor output voltage and indicate output polarity. The motor runs with good torque at about 6 V DC.
