Description
The Mechanical Equivalent of Heat J Apparatus, also known as a Joule’s mechanical equivalent of heat apparatus, is designed for physics demonstrations involving the relationship between mechanical work, heat generation and electrical heating. This apparatus is described as an older style unit patterned on the old Griffin model in the UK, where mechanical work done is converted into heat and compared with the electrical equivalent. The listed model HL3800-001 permits both mechanical friction heating and electrical heating of a solid copper calorimeter, allowing students to compare two methods of heating within the same apparatus.
Temperature measurement is carried out using a thermometer as listed, making the apparatus suitable for teacher-guided quantitative or semi-quantitative classroom investigations. This product is useful for teaching work-energy conversion, frictional heating, electrical heating, heat capacity, temperature rise and the experimental basis of the mechanical equivalent of heat.
