The IEC kinetic theory apparatus is a robust teaching demonstrator for modelling molecular motion in a gas using moving steel balls. A strong DC motor drives a vibrating platform inside an acrylic tube fitted with a scale. The platform has a rubber surface, and the tube is loaded with 100 small stainless steel balls. As motor speed is varied, the agitation of the balls changes, simulating the effect of heating on gas particle motion.
A light polystyrene foam disc is placed in the tube and floats on the agitated balls at a measurable height. A second heavier disc can be added or used instead, allowing comparison under different loads. By observing the floating height on the scale and changing the disc weight, students can see an approximate relationship between floating height as a model of gas volume and disc weight as a model of pressure.
