This brass Gravesande’s ball and ring apparatus is a classic heat demonstration for showing thermal expansion and contraction of metals. In operation, the ball passes through the ring at the matched condition. If the ring is chilled in ice, the ring contracts and the ball cannot pass through. If the ball is heated, it expands and also cannot pass through the ring. A chain links the ball to the ring to keep the parts together during handling, storage, and repeated demonstrations.
