Description

The IEC spark generator is a 240 V AC spark timing unit used with linear air tracks when motion measurement is done by spark recording rather than photogates. In a spark recording setup, a metal electrode fixed to two gliders produces sparks across small gaps from a long metal track on one side of the air track to a paper tape strip on the other side, creating a permanent record of motion.

The unit provides two sets of sparks with an accurately adjustable rate from 2.5 to 50 sparks per second. A pair of high-voltage cables connects the generator to the spark tracks. Each spark leaves a black dot on the paper tape, so dot spacing can be measured to calculate velocity and acceleration using the known spark rate and distance between dots.

Important use note: This instrument produces high voltage for spark discharge. Use only with the intended spark rails and follow standard electrical safety procedures.

FAQs
Q: What is this spark generator used for?
A: Spark recording on linear air tracks as an alternative to photogates.

Q: How does it mark the motion?
A: Sparks jump to the paper tape and leave black dots that record position at equal time intervals.

Q: What spark rate can be set?
A: 2.5 to 50 sparks per second, adjustable.

Q: Why are two spark sets mentioned?
A: The generator provides two sets of sparks for the spark track arrangement used in the setup.

Q: What cables are used to connect it?
A: A pair of high-voltage cables connects the unit to the spark tracks.
