Description

The Concave and Convex Mirror on Stand, also known as a Miracle Mirror, is designed for school and teaching laboratory optics demonstrations where students compare concave and convex mirror behaviour using one practical apparatus. The mirror is made from a 150 mm OD plastic hemisphere covered with aluminium. The back side functions as a concave mirror, while the front side functions as a convex mirror, allowing students to observe how the same object appears differently on each side.

The concave mirror side can produce a life-like real-image effect when an object is placed in the correct position. This makes the apparatus useful for demonstrating real image formation, image position, magnification and the difference between projected images and touchable objects. One practical activity involves attaching a small object, such as a pin, to the edge of a piece of cardboard and placing it upside down in front of the concave mirror. The image can appear as if it is a real object, helping students understand that an optical image may appear in space even though it cannot be physically touched.

The concave side can also be used with torchlight to demonstrate light reflection and shadow effects from a real-image position, supporting classroom discussion of ray paths and image formation. The convex mirror side can be used to show how reflected images appear smaller and how distances between objects can appear altered. This supports teaching around field of view, apparent distance and convex mirror image characteristics. Another demonstration involves filling approximately four-fifths of the concave mirror with water. When an object is placed before the mirror, the reflected image can appear as if it is rising out of the water, creating a strong visual demonstration for classroom optics lessons.

This apparatus is suitable for experiments on reflection, concave mirrors, convex mirrors, real images, virtual images, magnification, apparent distance and optical illusion-style demonstrations in physics teaching spaces. This item is supplied as the concave and convex mirror on stand only. Torch, cardboard, pins, water, demonstration objects and any additional accessories are not included unless specified separately.

LabChoice Australia supplies Concave and Convex Mirror apparatus for school science laboratories, physics classrooms, optics teaching spaces and general education laboratories requiring practical equipment for mirror reflection and image formation demonstrations.
