Description
Methyl violet test paper is a narrow-range pH indicator paper designed for very acidic solutions. It transitions from yellow at approximately pH 0.2 to violet at approximately pH 2.0. Above pH 2.0, the indicator remains violet, while at stronger acidity it shifts gradually toward yellow as pH approaches 0.2.
This test paper should not be used to test the stability of nitrocellulose propellants, which requires a specific “military” methyl violet method. Handle strips by the end only to avoid contamination, and dip for 1–2 seconds for a clear colour response.
Instructions
Remove one strip from the vial, hold only at the end.
Dip into the solution for 1–2 seconds, then remove.
Compare colour: yellow indicates stronger acidity near pH 0.2, violet indicates around pH 2.0 or above.
