Description

These flat glass plates are supplied as a set of 6 for interference practicals, commonly used to demonstrate Newton rings style patterns formed by light travelling from glass through an extremely thin air film and back into glass. The effect is created by forming a controlled air wedge between two flat plates, which produces clear bright and dark interference bands.

 

To set up the air wedge, two glass strips are separated at one end using a very thin paper spacer and allowed to touch at the other end. This creates a gradually changing air gap between the plates. When viewed under a monochromatic light source, a sodium source is commonly used, the interference pattern is easily seen and the spacing between the light and dark bands can be measured for classroom analysis.
