Magdeburg Hemispheres, 75 mm Atmospheric Pressure Demonstration Apparatus

$58.00(Ex GST)

  • Metal Magdeburg hemispheres, 75 mm diameter, classic atmospheric pressure demonstration apparatus.
  • Valve allows sealing and evacuation, supports comparison of separation force with air inside versus reduced pressure.
  • Uses two spring scales, measure pull force when separating hemispheres under different internal pressure states.
  • Vacuum pump step increases holding force, shows atmospheric pressure effect through larger force readings.
  • Laboratory or educational use only, supervise vacuum handling and secure grip during pull-apart demonstration.

Description

Magdeburg hemispheres (metal, 75 mm diameter) are a classic demonstration apparatus used to show the strength of atmospheric pressure. Two matching hemispheres join together with a valve so the internal air state can be changed, allowing students to compare separation force with air inside versus reduced air pressure inside.
Procedure: Press the two hemispheres together tightly and close the valve. Attach a spring scale to each hemisphere and pull apart, noting the force reading. For the vacuum demonstration, join the halves again and open the valve. Place a vacuum pump over the valve, pump air out, then close the valve. Pull apart again using the spring scales, the increased force required shows the effect of atmospheric pressure when the internal pressure is reduced.
Our products are for use in a laboratory or educational setting only.

FAQs

Q: What does this demonstrate?
A: The force of atmospheric pressure and how pressure difference affects separation force.

Q: What size are the hemispheres?
A: 75 mm diameter.

Q: What material are they made from?
A: Metal.

Q: What extra equipment is used in the vacuum part?
A: A vacuum pump and two spring scales, as described in the procedure.

Q: Why is it harder to pull apart after pumping air out?
A: Reduced internal pressure increases the pressure difference, so atmospheric pressure holds the halves together more strongly.
