Description

This mass of electron apparatus is built around a “magic eye” electron tube mounted on a base with terminals for heater and plate voltages. When powered, a fan of electrons can be observed by viewing through the end of the tube, providing a clear visual of electron beam behaviour in a controlled laboratory setup.
For the experiment, an air-cored solenoid is placed over the tube and a current is passed through the solenoid to generate a magnetic field at the solenoid centre. The magnetic field causes the electron fan to curve, and this curvature is measured to support the standard charge-to-mass (e/m) practical method and the approximate calculation of electron mass as described for this apparatus. This model is supplied with the tube and base, solenoid is not included.

FAQs
Q: What is included in this apparatus?
A: A “magic eye” electron tube mounted on a base with terminals for heater and plate voltages, solenoid is not included.
Q: What external supplies are required?
A: Heater and plate voltages for the tube, plus a current supply for the air-cored solenoid used in the magnetic deflection step.
Q: What is observed during operation?
A: A visible fan of electrons viewed through the end of the tube.
Q: What causes the curvature of the electron fan?
A: The magnetic field produced at the centre of an air-cored solenoid when current flows through it.
Q: What measurement supports the calculation?
A: The measured curvature of the electron fan in the magnetic field
