Description
Respiration Apparatus with Two Boiling Tubes, also known as an inhaled and exhaled air comparison apparatus, is designed for educational biology experiments that investigate differences between inspired and expired air. It provides students with a simple visual method for demonstrating that exhaled breath contains a higher concentration of carbon dioxide than inhaled atmospheric air.
The apparatus comprises two glass boiling tubes, each fitted with a two-hole rubber stopper. One short and one long 5 mm glass delivery tube pass through each stopper to create separate inlet and outlet pathways. Flexible PVC tubing connects the two sides to a central plastic T-piece, allowing inhaled and exhaled air to be directed through different boiling tubes.
For a typical experiment, each boiling tube is partially filled with a suitable carbon dioxide indicator, such as limewater or hydrogen carbonate indicator. The longer glass tube extends below the liquid level so that air bubbles through the solution, while the shorter tube remains above the liquid to complete the airflow pathway.
As the user breathes through the connected mouthpiece arrangement, atmospheric air passes through one indicator solution and exhaled air passes through the other. The solution exposed to exhaled breath generally changes more quickly because expired air contains more carbon dioxide. This enables students to compare the composition of inhaled and exhaled air through a clear and observable reaction.
This apparatus supports practical lessons covering human respiration, breathing, gas exchange, cellular respiration and carbon dioxide production. It is suitable for secondary school science laboratories, colleges, universities and introductory biology teaching environments where students require a straightforward demonstration of respiratory gas exchange.
For safe and hygienic classroom use, each participant should use a clean or disposable mouthpiece. The boiling tubes must not be overfilled, and users should never inhale indicator solution through the apparatus. All glass components should be handled carefully, cleaned after use and inspected for damage before each experiment.
Available from LabChoice Australia, the Respiration Apparatus with Two Boiling Tubes provides a practical and visually effective resource for biology education. It is well suited to Australian schools, universities and science teaching laboratories requiring reliable equipment for inhaled and exhaled air comparison experiments.
