For a typical experiment, each boiling tube is partially filled with a suitable carbon dioxide indicator, such as limewater or hydrogen carbonate indicator. The longer glass tube extends below the liquid level so that air bubbles through the solution, while the shorter tube remains above the liquid to complete the airflow pathway.

As the user breathes through the connected mouthpiece arrangement, atmospheric air passes through one indicator solution and exhaled air passes through the other. The solution exposed to exhaled breath generally changes more quickly because expired air contains more carbon dioxide.
