- Description
Description
This wooden pipe organ with graduated piston is a variable-length resonance tube for studying pitch, frequency, and standing waves in air columns. It is made from varnished wood and includes a movable sliding piston marked with a chromatic scale from C (512) to 1024, allowing repeatable setting of resonant length and tone. Overall pipe length is 54 cm, and the total length when fully extended is 840 mm.
By blowing across the pipe, or by connecting it via a rubber hose to an air supply faucet, the air column inside the pipe resonates and produces sound. The sliding piston changes the resonant cavity length, which changes the pitch, making it suitable for demonstrating how frequency relates to air-column length. Used with a second pipe of the same type, it can also be used to investigate beats. With a microphone, amplifier, and oscilloscope, the waveform and frequency of the produced tones can be observed and compared.
FAQs
Q: What does the sliding piston do?
A: It varies the resonant cavity length to change pitch and set repeatable tones using the graduated scale.
Q: What is the marked scale range?
A: Chromatic scale from C (512) to 1024, as stated.
Q: What are the lengths?
A: Pipe length 54 cm, overall length fully extended 840 mm.
Q: How is sound produced?
A: By blowing on the pipe or supplying air through a rubber hose to an air supply faucet.
Q: What experiments can be done with a second pipe?
A: Beats can be investigated using a second pipe of the same type.
