Description

Set of 24 radiation absorbers (50 mm square) designed for reliable radiation attenuation and shielding experiments in teaching and training laboratories. The absorber sequence progresses from very low-mass materials such as tissue paper and aluminium foils, through aluminium sheet and plate, then into lead foils, finishing with lead up to 12 mm thick. This graduated range supports clear demonstrations of how absorber selection and thickness influence the detected count rate in practical radiation studies.
Each absorber is permanently labelled with its areal density in g/cm², which is the mass per unit area the radiation passes through. Using g/cm² allows consistent, physics-relevant comparison across different absorber materials and supports quantitative analysis, including recording results in tables and plotting attenuation trends. This makes the set suitable for structured lab exercises where repeatability and comparability matter.
The kit includes a combined holder for both the absorber and the radioactive source to position items in a stable horizontal plane. Maintaining consistent geometry reduces alignment variation between runs, improving repeatability and strengthening comparisons across absorber steps. Plastic support plates are also included to support absorbers during use, including when used in a radiation “castle” arrangement. Supplied in a stout card storage box with dividers to keep components organised and protected between sessions.
Important use note: This kit includes absorbers and positioning accessories only. It is intended for use with an appropriate radiation source and detector under your organisation’s standard laboratory and radiation safety procedures.

FAQs
Q: What is this absorber set used for?
A: It is used for radiation attenuation experiments by placing absorbers between a source and detector to observe changes in count rate as absorber areal density increases.
Q: Why are absorbers marked in g/cm²?
A: g/cm² is areal density, mass per unit area. It enables more consistent comparison across different materials and supports quantitative analysis.
Q: What does the holder do?
A: It keeps the absorber and source aligned in the same horizontal plane, helping maintain consistent geometry and improving measurement repeatability.
Q: What are the plastic support plates for?
A: They provide stable support for absorbers during experiments, including in a castle-style setup.
Q: Does the kit include a radioactive source or detector?
A: No. The kit provides the absorber set and accessories for use with your existing source and detector system.
