Lead Acetate Indicator Paper Strips, Vial of 100
$11.00(Ex GST)
- Detect hydrogen sulfide in water, specified sensitivity down to 5 ppm for routine screening checks.
- Dip strip a few seconds, greying often begins around 1–3 ppm, darkens with concentration.
- Colour intensity can progress darker up to about 400 ppm, supports quick comparative assessment.
- Can be used as a moist strip for suspected H₂S areas, distilled water wetting is sufficient.
- Minimal cross-reactivity stated, thiols, thioketones, mercaptans give negative response for selectivity.

Description
Lead acetate test paper is a visual indicator for detecting hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in water, useful for screening drinking water, well water, and groundwater where sulfur odour or contamination is suspected. The paper is designed to darken in response to H₂S, providing a fast, easy-to-interpret colour change result without instruments.
To test, dip a strip into the water for a few seconds, then remove and observe the colour. Light greying can begin around 1–3 ppm, and the paper darkens as concentration increases, up to about 400 ppm. The strips can also be lightly moistened with distilled water and placed in an area where hydrogen sulfide is thought to be present, no acetate buffer is required. The test paper is stated not to cross-react with thiols, thioketones, or mercaptans, which produce a negative response.
Instructions
Dip strip in sample water for a few seconds, remove and observe colour.
Light grey can indicate low H₂S, darker grey indicates higher concentration.
For air area checks, moisten with distilled water and place near suspected H₂S source.
FAQs
Q: What does lead acetate test paper detect?
A: Hydrogen sulfide in water, with sensitivity specified as low as 5 ppm.
Q: What colour change should I look for?
A: White paper turning grey, darker grey indicates higher concentration.
Q: What concentration range is referenced?
A: Greying may begin around 1–3 ppm, darkening can increase up to about 400 ppm.
Q: Can it be used outside of water testing?
A: Yes, moisten with distilled water and place in areas where H₂S may be present.
Q: Does it cross-react with thiols or mercaptans?
A: No, thiols, thioketones, and mercaptans are stated to give a negative response.
